bullet  General Notes:

“William F. Burton received his education in Seaford public schools, after which he entered his father's business. Here he received a thorough training and remained there until his father's death in 1916, conducting the store with his brother Charles for the estate until it was sold in 1917 to Seaford Hardware Company. Early in 1918, when the US had already entered WW1, he entered the US Army Air Service and dwas stationed for a while at Mineola Field, Long Island.. In the spring of 1919 he was sent to France for active service, operating most of the time in Toul at HQ. Mustered out of the service in 1919, he spent four months in special study at Sorbonne Univ. in Paris, returning to the US the same year. For a year he was engaged in commercial aviation in the South and became associated with a firm of Phila. Architects in their projects in MC and FL, continuing in that work until 1925, when he and his brother Charles opened their store. Business was begun with a complete, new stock, and the firm occupies two floors of a store, 40 x 85 feet, in addition to two warehouses” (Beven, 1929). The firm of Burton Brothers was organized to handle shelf and heavy hardware, paints, oils, stoves and farm implements. Prominent in American Legion and in community affairs. Member of Hiram Lodge #21, Free & Accepted Masons, Phila. Consistory, and Lu Lu Temple. The store was sold to the Marvel family, which continues to manage it.
